How we calculate the Virtual Density Insight and why might it be empty

The Virtual Density Insight provides visibility into the distribution of virtual machines (VMs) across your private cloud hosts. It helps you understand resource utilization, identify under- or over-utilized hosts, and ensure a balanced virtual environment.

How do we calculate this Insight?

This Insight is based on inventory data collected through:

  • Block 64 Discovery Appliance (Block Box)

  • Block 64 Discovery Application (Block App)

It provides:

  • The total number of guests identified across VMware, Hyper-V, and other environments.

  • A breakdown of guest operating systems (e.g., Windows, Windows Server, Unknown).

  • Host-level details such as CPU cores, RAM, VM migration state, and guest counts.

The goal is to give a clear overview of how virtual machines are distributed and highlight potential areas for optimization or investigation.

Why might this Insight be empty or missing data?

This Insight may appear empty or incomplete if:

  • The Discovery Appliance or Application has not been deployed correctly.

  • Data ingestion from the customer’s environment is still in progress.

  • Hosts are inaccessible or not reporting due to configuration or connectivity issues.

Troubleshooting Checklist:

  • Confirm that the Discovery Appliance (Block Box) or Discovery Application (Block App) is installed and active.

  • Allow time for initial data ingestion, especially in large or complex environments.

  • Ensure that hosts are online and reachable during scans.

  • Verify that the tool has sufficient access to your virtualization environment (e.g., VMware vCenter or Hyper-V).
    • For VMware environments, refer to the relevant configuration guides available within the  application or on the appliance
