Security : EndPoint : Cost by Category
How we calculate the Cost by Category Insight and why might it be empty
The Cost by Category Insight provides visibility into the total cost of endpoint security software, grouped by category (e.g., Endpoint Security, Anti-Virus, Identity Management). It helps organizations understand how their budget is distributed across different types of security tools and highlights opportunities to optimize spend.
How do we calculate this Insight?
This Insight is based on endpoint software inventory collected from your environment using:
-
Block 64 Discovery Application
-
Block 64 Discovery Appliance
-
Jamf Pro Integration (for macOS devices)
It organizes installed security software into categories and shows:
-
In-Use Cost – spend tied to licenses actively in use.
-
Recoverable Cost – spend associated with unused or underused licenses.
-
Category-level breakdown – allowing you to compare cost distribution across endpoint protection, antivirus, and identity management solutions.
This makes it easier to assess whether security investments are balanced and aligned with organizational needs.
Why might this Insight be empty or missing data?
This Insight may appear empty or incomplete if:
-
The Discovery Application or Appliance has not been fully deployed or has not completed its initial data ingestion.
-
Endpoints are not reporting correctly or scans are unable to reach them.
-
If using Jamf Pro, the integration is not fully configured or required API permissions are missing.
Troubleshooting Checklist:
Confirm that a discovery tool (Application, Appliance, or Jamf Pro) is installed and actively reporting.
Allow sufficient time for initial ingestion, especially in large environments.
If using Jamf Pro, ensure the integration is connected and the API role includes the necessary read privileges.
Check that endpoints are included in scans and accessible on the network.
