How we calculate the Public Cloud Database Cost Change Insight and why might it be empty

The Database Cost Change Insight tracks how your database-related spend in the public cloud has shifted compared to the previous period. It helps you quickly see whether costs are increasing, decreasing, or remaining stable, so you can respond to unexpected spikes or confirm the impact of optimization efforts.

How do we calculate this Insight?

This Insight is based on billing and usage data from:

  • AWS Integration (via Role ARN)

  • Azure Integration (via Azure environment privileges)

It provides:

  • The cost difference for database services (e.g., AWS RDS, Azure SQL Database) between the current and previous billing periods.

  • Visibility into whether spend has gone up, down, or stayed the same.

  • Contextual information alongside the Total Database Cost Insight, so you can compare total spend with the trend line.

Why might this Insight be empty or missing data?

This Insight may appear empty or incomplete if:

  • No AWS or Azure integrations have been configured.

  • The AWS Role ARN is missing or incorrectly configured, preventing cost data retrieval.

  • The Azure integration account does not have sufficient privileges to access cost and usage data.

  • Data ingestion from new accounts or subscriptions is still in progress.

Troubleshooting Checklist:

  • Confirm that AWS and/or Azure integrations are connected.

  • For AWS, ensure the Role ARN is configured correctly and has permissions to retrieve billing data.

  • For Azure, verify the integration account has sufficient privileges to access subscription cost data.

  • Allow time for ingestion after adding or updating integrations.
