Collect Utilization Metrics from AWS

Overview

When you connect an AWS account to Block 64, we inventory your EC2 instances and other resources. You can also have Insights collect resource utilization metrics, CPU and memory usage over time, by reading them from Amazon CloudWatch. Utilization data powers the sizing figures in the Cloud Sizing Compute report, such as 95th CPU % and 95th RAM %.

Collection is off by default and can be turned on or off at any time without affecting your inventory or connection credentials.

Note on memory metrics CloudWatch does not report memory usage for EC2 instances unless the CloudWatch agent is running on the instance. Instances without the agent will show CPU utilization but a dash (-) for RAM.  


Before you begin

  • Your AWS integration is already connected (see Integrations : Cloud : AWS).
  • Cost: metrics are read through Amazon CloudWatch. Depending on the number of instances in your account and your existing CloudWatch usage, enabling collection can affect your AWS bill. See CloudWatch pricing before enabling.


Enabling Collection

  1. In Insights, go to Config > Integrations and select AWS.
  2. On the integration page, find the Collection Settings card.
  3. Switch Collect Utilization Metrics on.
