Collect Utilization Metrics from Azure

 

Overview

When you connect your Microsoft Azure tenant to Block 64, we inventory your Azure resources. You can also have Insights collect resource utilization metrics — CPU and memory usage over time — for your Azure virtual machines by reading them from your tenant’s Azure Monitor. Utilization data powers the sizing figures in the Cloud Sizing Compute report, such as 95th CPU % and 95th RAM %.

Collection is off by default and can be turned on or off at any time without affecting your inventory or connection credentials.

Before you begin

  • Your Azure integration is already connected (see Integrations : Cloud : Azure).
  • No additional consent is required — utilization metrics use the same delegated admin consent you granted when connecting your tenant.
  • Cost: metrics are read through Azure Monitor. Depending on the number of virtual machines in your tenant and your existing Azure Monitor usage, enabling collection can affect your Azure bill. See Azure Monitor pricing before enabling.

Enabling collection

  1. In Insights, go to Config > Integrations and select Azure.
  2. On the integration page, find the Collection Settings card.
  3. Switch Collect Utilization Metrics on.

That’s it — collection starts automatically. Metrics are polled approximately hourly for each virtual machine and retained for 60 days, so the percentile figures in the Cloud Sizing Compute report build up a meaningful picture over the first days and weeks.

Note Turning the toggle off stops collection but does not delete your integration credentials or your inventory data. Turning it back on resumes collection.

Seeing the results

Open Reports > Cloud Sizing > Compute. Azure virtual machines with utilization data show 95th CPU % and 95th RAM % figures, and their Collector column shows Integration.

If the report includes Azure inventory but you see a banner reading “Azure inventory is included in this report, but resource utilization collection is currently turned off,” the toggle above has not been enabled for this environment.
