Cloud & Infrastructure - Private Cloud Density

Private Cloud Density Report

Overview

This report provides an analysis of virtual machine (VM) density across hosts in a private cloud environment, covering platforms such as VMware, Hyper-V, and Nutanix. It enables users to track VM distribution, analyze host capacity, and optimize workload allocation for improved infrastructure efficiency.

What This Report Shows

The report offers insights into VM density and host utilization. Key sections include:

  • Density
Displays the total number of hosts and guests across the customer’s entire private cloud infrastructure, including VMware, Hyper-V, and Nutanix environments. This summary helps visualize overall scale and virtualization levels.

  • All Hosts
Provides a comprehensive list of every host in the customer environment. Columns include Host Name, Operating System, CPU Cores, RAM, VM Migration Status, and Guest Quantity

Users can click the number under the "Guests" column to drill down into the list of virtual machines running on that host. These lists are also exportable for further offline analysis.

Users can also click the 'Export' button to download host and guest data for in-depth review.

Key Metrics & Deriving Value

This report helps customers optimize their private cloud infrastructure by offering:

  • VM Density Insights
Helps assess the total number of hosts and guests, providing a snapshot of the overall virtualization footprint across all supported platforms.
  • Host Resource Utilization
Displays key resource metrics (CPU, RAM, OS) to identify underutilized or overburdened hosts.
  • Migration Status Analysis
Allows users to track which VMs are eligible for migration, ensuring better resource allocation.
  • Guest Quantity per Host
Enables IT teams to evaluate host efficiency and plan capacity accordingly.

Clicking the Guest Quantity reveals a detailed list of virtual machines per host.

  • Export & Further Analysis Options
Allows customers to export both host and guest data for deeper infrastructure analysis.

Data Sources & Calculation Methodology

The data in this report is sourced from hypervisor management tools, private cloud monitoring platforms, and infrastructure logs. Calculations are derived as follows:

  • Total VM and Host Count
Aggregation of all VMs and hosts across VMware, Hyper-V, and Nutanix platforms.
  • Host-Specific Metrics
Extracted from hypervisor APIs, categorizing hosts by OS, CPU, RAM, and guest VM count.
  • VM Migration Status
Analyzed based on system resource utilization and predefined migration policies.
  • Density Visualization
Created using host and guest totals to represent virtualization levels.

Conclusion

This report equips customers with critical insights into VM density and host utilization. By leveraging these insights—along with interactive exploration and export capabilities—businesses can optimize resource allocation, improve workload distribution, and enhance overall private cloud performance for a more efficient and scalable infrastructure.
